L'IDIBGI (2005) has its origins in the Foundation Dr. Josep Trueta (1995), and its purpose is to promote, develop, manage and promote biomedical research in the area of Girona. Since 2008 it has public, with input from the Government in governing, and is currently part as a center attached, the CERCA (SEARCH) program.

The IdIBGi is structured with research groups at the University Hospital Dr. Josep Trueta (HJT) and the University of Girona, Institute of Diagnostic Imaging (IDI), Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) and the Institute of Primary Care (IAP) / Catalan Institute Health Girona.
